The Faculty of Humanities
and Social Sciences at Hanil University and Presbyterian
Theological Seminary is the fundamental faculty on campus,
with more than 10 faculty members responsible for teaching
the majority of the university's core curriculum courses to
all students each year. Established in 1996, the Faculty of
HUSS focuses on the study of humanism based on Christian
truth and freedom, and in a broader sense, on the nurturing
of future leaders of Korean society. In pursuit of these
aims, the Faculty of HUSS encourages students to develop a
new spirit of learning and creative ability through
revisiting and searching for the old, traditional values of
Eastern and Western cultures as well as Biblical knowledge.
As of 2007, the Faculty of HUSS has more than 250
undergraduate students pursuing a variety of disciplines
through its 3 majors and 12 minors from other faculties.
Three major fields in Faculty of HUSS are:
English Language and Literature
Sociology and Economics
Management of Social-Welfare Facilities
English Language and Literature: The Department of English
Language and Literature has three goals: 1) To make students
proficient readers, writers and speakers of English; and
prepare them to continue advanced studies. 2) To educate
students about traditional and contemporary British and
American culture and literature as well as those of ancient
Greece, to enable students to understand the depth and width
of the human spirit. 3) To enable students to practice and
experience missiological English and circumstances. The
curriculum of over 30 courses includes English grammar,
composition and conversation; classical and modern British
and American novels, drama, poetry, and literary criticism;
Greek tragedy and comedy; and theories of English language
education.
Sociology and Economics: This interdisciplinary major field
offers over 30 courses which give students an opportunity to
pursue advanced studies in economics such as, micro and
macro economic theory, international trade and finance,
industrial organization, and monetary policy. In the
sociology fields, students train and qualify themselves in
order to professionally understand, analyze, and predict
various social problems including unemployment, poverty,
social security, and welfare for the minorities. The faculty
also trains and educates students in the interdisciplinary
ways of connecting sociology and economics, thus promoting
understanding of our socio-economic environment and ways to
solve the problems mentioned above.
Management of Social-Welfare Facilities: The extensive
curriculum of this newly-established department includes
over 25 courses and seminars, including 14 required courses
for the Social Welfare Workers' License. The department is
established to meet the growing demands of management of
welfare facilities. Thus this department is committed to
turning out experts who will contribute to the management of
social welfare facilities as well as to the policy making
concerning social-welfare facilities. Subjects covered
include social research methods; contemporary sociological
theories; social organization and stratification; problems
in Korean welfare facilities; dynamics of social change and
demands; welfare psychology and ethics; social development;
social statistics and demography; comparative sociology; and
social anthropology.
