Hanil
University and Presbyterian Theological Seminary currently
offers theological studies in three faculties.
The first is the Faculty of Theology which offers a
four-year program of theological studies leading to the Th.B.
degree. This undergraduate college level program includes
courses in Biblical Studies(both Old and New Testaments),
Systematic and Constructive Theology, Church History,
Missiology(Taekwondo Mission), Pastoral Counseling,
Christian Education and Pastoral Theology and Ministry. The
language of instruction is Korean with occasional courses
being offered with translation, usually using either English
or German. Students from other departments and faculties
frequently take theology courses and an increasing number of
students pursue a double major in Theology and Social
Welfare. There are approximately 450-500 students studying
in the undergraduate Faculty of Theology. This includes
regular day students, evening class students and a special
program on Mondays for women evangelists and pastors' wives.
The second faculty offering theological studies is the
Presbyterian Theological Seminary(Hanil Graduate School of
Theology), a three-year graduate program leading to the
professional M.Div. degree for those seeking ordination. The
M.Div. program prepares women and men for ordination in the
Presbyterian Church of Korea(Tonghap) as well as other
denominations. The language of instruction is Korean with
occasional courses being offered with translation using
English or German. Currently there are approximately 150-200
students enrolled in the Hanil Graduate School of Theology.
The third faculty offering theological studies is the Asia
Pacific Graduate School of Theological Studies, which offers
a graduate program for recognized church leaders culminating
in either the M.A. or Th.M. degree. Currently major fields
of study include Biblical Studies, Theology, Missiology, and
Christian Education. Applicants to this program must possess
an undergraduate college or university degree for admission
into the M.A. program and a university degree plus a basic
theological degree (Th.B., B.D., or M.Div.) for admission
into the Th.M. program. All applicants must be recommended
by their home churches. Currently the Asia Pacific Graduate
School of Theological studies offers two programs-one using
Korean as the medium of instruction and the other using
English as the medium of instruction. Approximately 35
students are enrolled in the Asia Pacific Graduate School of
Theological Studies.
Although Hanil University is Presbyterian in its
denominational affiliation and Reformed in its theological
tradition, both the faculty and student body are thoroughly
ecumenical and students from all Christian churches are
encouraged to apply.
The predecessor institutions to Hanil, the Neel Bible School
in Kwangju and the Ada Hamilton Clark Bible School in Jeonju
(founded in 1923), were both founded for the training of
Bible women to serve the Korean church. When the two schools
merged to form Hanil in 1961 the focus continued to be upon
providing quality education for women. Although Hanil became
coeducational in 1982, there continues to be a strong
emphasis upon education for women and approximately 60% of
the student body of the university are women. It is
significant that the first woman to be ordained in the
Presbyterian Church of Korea is a graduate of Hanil.
